Daily Reflection: Losing Sight

Lately I have been suffering from severe eye problems, I pondered about the mountains, about the ants, but then I came back to what I feel is touching me the most these days.

You really don’t know the value of something until it slips from your hands. Imagine, if all of a sudden you can’t see anymore, everything around you becomes pitch black, and you are told that this blessing have been taken away from you completely, what would you do? you would be scared as now from being a totally independent person, suddenly you have become dependent person. If I were to be billionaire, and this naimah eye sight was sold in the market, I would spend all my dollars just to purchase it. Just one of the blessings of Allah s.w.t. Allah says, in Surah Balad verse 8,
 90:8

“Have we not made for him two eyes”

For those with an eyesight, this verse should make them raise their hands and be thankful of this blessing.

Have you ever pondered that the mechanism of a camera is based on the functioning of our eyes, subhan Allah. We know that cameras are used to capture each and every memory but remember it cannot come close to the human eye. Subhan Allah our eyes capture each and every memory, and whatever we see around us, storing it in our brains like a memory chip. From cameras, memories can be lost, but subhan Allah even if we lose our sight, the memories captured through our eyes remain forever in our minds and only Allah has the ability to take it away.

The false usage of our eyes will lead us to many darknesses in the dunya and the akhirah, but most dangerously, it will become a witness against us on the Day of Judgement. We easily get impressed with our iPhone cameras, but we forget that the real camera is our vision, that Allah has so perfectly proportioned for us along with our ability to hear and our heart to feel. Still we see sufferings of others, such as the blind, yet we forget to make du’a for them, and be thankful that Allah has given us complete vision of the eyes. We forget to say that even with their blindness, they are still perfect and there is Allah’s qadr behind it. I was recently told that slowly, but surely, I will lose my eyesight. But I see this as an opportunity to closer to my Rabb and read and write as much as I can as the Quran is the best healer. Allah is definitely sufficient for me.

Allah s.w.t tells us in various places in Quran, “Affara’itum”?  Don’t you see? Don’t you ponder over the blessings of Allah? We all must realize that the eyes are the windows to our hearts and that Allah connects our loss of sight with the sealing of our hearts. Sealing of our ability to think about the greatest purpose of our lives. Iman in the heart is the real sight and with this comes the ability to see the real truth about the world.  May Allah give us the heart that only sees what pleases Allah and the eyes that cry in His remembrance and the eyes that see the best in people. Ameen.
